Most people would be talking about the Big Blue Hole of Belize and its extensive coral system when asked about great sightings in Belize. True, the blue hole is majestic, but it tends to eclipse other historical attractions in Belize. Today, you get to learn of the little known historical sightings that make Belize an awesome destination to visit. They include;
1. The Caana in Caracol
If there is one monument that showcases the extent of the Maya civilization, it would be the Caana. It is one of the few remaining Pre-Columbian Maya architectural marvels. Note that Caracol is a Mayan archaeological site located in Cayo District of Belize.
2. El Castillo at Xunantunich
This is another Pre-Columbian Mayan castle that gives insights into how the Mayan royalty lived before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors.
3. The Belizean Cities
All the Belizean cities have something interesting to offer. They are loaded with history as seen in the museums. During your visit make sure you explore Belize City, San Ignacio, Belmopan and Orange Walk Town.
4. Lamanai
This is a Mesoamerican archaeological site. It is located in the Belizean Orange Walk District.
5. Actun Tunichil Muknal
This is also locally referred to as ATM or Xibalba. It is located near San Ignacio. It is a cave with lots of Mayan ceramics, skeletons, stoneware etc.
Other local points of interest you would be interested to visit include; Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Belize Barrier Reef, Belize Zoo, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Guanacaste National Park and Museum of Belize among many more.
